Debut Delight – CYFC U16 Match Report

Hawkinge Youth FC Under 15s – 1 – Canterbury Youth FC Under 15s – 2

Canterbury kicked off the new season with a solid victory away at Hawkinge.

Both sides fielded a number of new players, but Canterbury had the better chances in the first half with shots from Charlie Nicholson and Jacob Williams, as well as a towering header from JJ Bennett that went narrowly wide.
If Canterbury approached half-time disappointed to be only level, this changed in the last few minutes of the half.  A Hawkinge player was brought down on the edge of the area and the referee awarded a penalty.  The subsequent penalty was well struck to the corner of the goal, but stand-in keeper and man of the match Paddy Jackaman dived full-length to make an outstanding save.
0-0 at half-time.
The second half was scrappier but the game was decided by two pieces of quality finishing.  Firstly a bright passing move featuring Seamus Mohan, Adam Hogben, ended with Nicholson finishing decisively into the left hand corner of the net, and following a Hawkinge equaliser, the Canterbury winner came as Steven Eldridge laid off a pass to Hogben, who swivelled and powered an unstoppable shot past the impressive Hawkinge keeper.  Canterbury’s defence stayed resolute and the game ended with a tight, but deserved 2-1 victory.
