25 May 2008 - Canterbury Youth Under 10's win Ashford Tournament

Canterbury Youth Under 10’s Take Honours at Ashford Borough Tournament

Canterbury Youth battled there way through to the final against Park Farm at the Ashford Borough Tournament. Both sides were undefeated and neither had conceded a single goal along the way. It promised to be a thrilling final and the boys didn’t disappoint, every last one of them.

Canterbury unlocked the Park Farm defence with a surging run from Ed Duddigan. He cut through a sea of red shirts to unleash a thunderbolt and put his side 1 nil up by the interval. The second half swung in Park Farms favour and minutes before the final whistle, Park Farm equalised but not before Lewis Curry pulled off a spectacular save which rather fortuitously dropped to a lurking attacker. It finished one a piece at the end of ordinary time and now the boys had to dig deep for 6 minutes of extra time.

The game hung in the balance. It would need but one player to stand tall and lead their side to victory. ‘Cometh the hour, cometh the man’: Ed Duddigan got his foot on the ball and surged forward. His team mates’ bomb burst away dragging red shirts with them, creating space which Ed made the most of. The strike when it came was as awesome as his first and threatened the fabric of the net as it rifled past the keeper. Canterbury finished 2-1 after the first period of extra time.

In the final period Park Farm were stung into life and swarmed over Canterbury looking for an equaliser. The tension was tangible as the minutes slipped by. In the dying moments, Canterbury were awarded a corner. Shaun Black delivered a gift wrapped ball into the box and Dan Sparks rose above a crowd of shirts to direct a perfect header home to make it 3. With less than a minute and half to go, this was the coup de grce. There would surely be no way of upsetting the Canterbury party now.

The final whistle saw Canterbury 3-1 winners against an undefeated Park Farm side who had previously won all their tournaments. This was a mighty performance from an accomplished Canterbury side.
